Lady Montpellier had invited them both to tea and even though they had barely met at Lord Vaughn’s ball, her mother had agreed to go. Sarah was not looking forward to it. She had met Miss Winchester as she stood on the sidelines of the dance floor and she had been most unpleasant to Sarah. Granted she was the daughter of a Viscount and thus considerably higher in the social ladder than Sarah. That was no reason to be rude.

Sarah was not looking forward to spending the entire afternoon with her.

When she and her mother arrived at the Montpellier residence, the situation was worse than Sarah had imagined. They were having tea with not just the Montpellier ladies, but also Lady Willoughby, her daughter Lady Armstead, and granddaughter Lady Penelope.

With a sigh, she followed her mother into the parlor. Unfortunately, she could not simply hide behind her mother but had to sit with the younger ladies and make conversation.

She offered a strained smile and tried frantically to think of something to say.

Lady Penelope inclined her head and pursed her lips. “I understand congratulations are in order.”

Sarah’s eyebrows rose, as she tried to fathom what Lady Penelope might be referring to. The burning jealousy she could see flaring in her eyes gave her a bit of a clue. “Oh, you mean my engagement. Yes, we’re very happy.”

Lady Penelope’s lips twisted and her mother leaned over to pat her on the knee. “Lady Penelope just came out last year. When did you come out?” she asked.

“Um, I did not.” Sarah said.

Lady Armstead attempted to look shocked. “Is that so? Are you not eligible?” she covered her mouth as if she’d just realized her faux pas. “Oh, I’m sorry I forgot your Father is a cit.”

Sarah pursed her lips and said nothing.

The other ladies turned to each other and began to speak of things Sarah had no idea about. She supposed that they had done what they had intended by making her feel inadequate. She took a deep breath, pasted a smile on her face and pretended to be absorbed in her mother’s conversation with Lady Montpellier. All she knew for sure was that it was something about the Season and how tiresome it was and how Bath was a much better destination for the summer.

They went on to discuss the actual baths and whether or not they were helpful.

“I haven’t had occasion to try them. It’s been a surprisingly busy time.”

“Yes. I understand your daughter’s been having a time of it. Managed to get herself caught in the rain, didn’t she? Quite convenient.”

Her mother’s eyes narrowed. “I’m sure I don’t know what you mean.”

“Oh, nothing,” Lady Montpellier waved an airy hand, “I simply meant that it was a surprisingly fortuitous downpour she found herself in with the Marquess, was it not?”

Sarah narrowed her eyes in annoyance and almost got to her feet in anger. Her mother caught her eye, shaking her head in a quelling manner. Sarah slowly lowered herself back onto her seat, crossing her ankles and her wrists, and focused on breathing in and out.
